School Streets
Waltham Forest Council, in partnership with Gwyn Jones Primary School held a consultation for a trial School Street in October. We are pleased to annouce that we will be having a trial school street starting in Feburary 2026. We would like to thank our local community for their understanding of this importance issue to our school.
Why we consulted to have a School Street?
-
Illegal Parking and Associated Safety Risks
Persistent illegal parking outside the school creates significant hazards for pupils and their families. Obstructed sightlines and reduced crossing visibility increase the risk of accidents. -
Severe Congestion During Peak Times
Morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods are marked by heavy traffic congestion. This not only compromises the safety of children and parents crossing the road but also disrupts the surrounding neighbourhood. -
Documented Near-Miss Incident
A recent near-miss involving a pupil and a moving vehicle highlights the urgent need for preventive action. We are determined to avoid a serious injury—or worse—resulting from current traffic conditions. -
Environmental and Health Considerations
Pupils have been learning about the harmful effects of vehicle emissions and car idling. They have expressed a strong desire to reduce air pollution and contribute to a healthier environment. -
Promotion of Active Travel
Implementing a School Street would encourage families to adopt active modes of travel such as walking, cycling, or scooting. This would improve pupil health, reduce traffic volumes, and support wider sustainability objectives.
